Start of the 21st Century
© 2008 Jayme Kelly Curtis

Here we are at the start of the 21st century
And they're telling us to buy some duct tape
And some Visqueen
But I thought at the start of the 21st century
We'd be somehow more grown up
And less inclined to catastrophe
We learned way back in kindergarten
It's nice to share your toys
And you don't earn the gold star
Being a bully boy

So here we are at the start of the 21st century
And we terrorize the playground
And ignore diplomacy
We'd better give ourselves a timeout in the brand new century
'Cause there's so much more at stake
Then bruised egos and skinned knees
'Cause even though we've failed
We're pushing through to the next grade
We can't read the writin' on the wall
We miscount the graves

Evolve is an anagram of love
Love is the heart of the golden rule
Do unto others as you'd have them do for you
It's a simple ABC we all learned in school

I hope we make it to the end of the 21st Century
Will we graduate to peace?
Or blow ourselves to eternity?
I hope there are no more gang colors
Like code orange and code red
And we put to rest the notion of us and them
