The English Girl
© Jayme Kelly Curtis
A Major, a minor
A good man beside her
His rank was no concern
To the English girl
She married a soldier
A strong man to hold her
But his conflicts took him far
From the English girl
The babies came swift
And she worked a double shift
In the factories that fueled the bloody war
Her soldier came back changed
With a clanging in his veins
And she followed him 'cross the ocean
Home to Babylon
Oh had I known then, all I know today
A rich man would earn all my charms
I'd dance the night away I'd stay single and gay
And wait for that rich man to come along
A counter, a diner
Two hungry mouths beside her
She struggled to feed them
In Hell's Kitchen
A room with no view
In a place called Bellevue
They took her
When she could sacrifice no more
She married a Mick
Who made it all better quick
And she tried hard to love him
Above all others
His veins were clean
But his thirst for spirits keen
And soon another baby came along
Oh had I known then, all I know today
A rich man would earn all my charms
I'd dance the night away I'd stay single and gay
And wait for that rich man to come along
