Ukulele Dick's Motown Jug Band
Revue Celebrates 50 Years of Motown Hits
SONG LISTIT ALL STARTED WITH THE BASS LINE FROM "MY GIRL" AND A CERAMIC JUG ~ Jugtown U.S.A. performed faithful arrangements
of
Motown's greatest hits played on jug band instruments. The evening
included
a preshow retrospective of the year 1959 by local musical man of
letters
Paul Wagner. Funny man Sven Davis's "History of Motown" weaved an
historical
tapestry throughout the concert both comical and poignant.
"Motown records was formed 50 years ago this year and this music remains beloved," says Jugtown U.S.A. founder Ukulele Dick. "Attempting to reproduce classic Motown hits on jug band instruments struck me as a worthwhile challenge and something that has never been done before. Imagine the throbbing bass line from Martha and the Vandella's classic 'Heat Wave' pounding out from the washtub while the baritone sax chops issue forth from ceramic jug. We’re using washboard, mandolin, banjo, harmonica, kazoo and ukulele — as well as an all star cast of vocal heroes — to render the classic hits of The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, and many more Motown legends note for note on instruments anyone can afford." Jugtown U.S.A., the band, features bassist Matt Bohnneville (aka Matt Bohn), drummer Alfredo Romeo Ferrari (aka Olaf Schiappacasse), and vocalists/multi-instrumentalists Mona Lott (aka Jayme Kelly Curtis), Otto Knockenpinger (aka Topher Gayle), Patti "Don't Mess With Me" Pontiac (aka Patti Maxine) and Ukulele Dick. The Don Quixote's show also included Rhan Wilson and Grammy nominated vocalist Tammi Brown. Additional promotional support was provided by Fiddling Cricket Concert Series. 1) Postman
