Many Seasons Ago

Many seasons ago
Before the campfires and soft beds
We ran with the coyotes
Standing on our hind legs
Stretching our joy into the night
And though it took its toll
All who were there agreed
It was our finest hour we experienced ecstasy
Now sometimes at night
We hear the coyotes and we stir in our beds
Our blood leaps up
We want to run with the coyotes
Shake off the bonds of sobriety
But the telephone rings
The water heater springs a leak
The baby cries
The alternator skips a beat
Oooh, I used to be so wild
A howling, spinning, dancing, barefoot child
Oooh, we used to be so wild
We were all together and amplified
Some never survived the run
The bloodied paws and the jaws that tear hearts and limbs
And some we left behind
Janice and Jimmie run with them still
And now we cling to our survival
Like a mother clings to her child
But something deep inside us still smells slightly wild
