Sideshow
© 1999 Jayme Kelly Curtis

All the world loves a sideshow
So you and I decided to live there
Where the jack-a-lopes cry
With the dog-faced boy
In the world behind the curtain

And none of it was real
But some of it was fun
In the world behind the curtain
You would sing your song for a touchdown laugh
And the audience got what it deserved

The talker winks and nods
Don't ask too many questions
Just pony up your dollar bill
And step behind the curtain

One night as I lay sleeping
On our bed of rusty nails
I dreamed of a place
Where babies laugh and cry
And the world beyond the curtain

When I awoke that morning
I saw a  man swallowing fire
And I knew I couldn't stay
Where the jack-a-lopes play
So I ran away from the circus
